Body armor preference??? by backatit » Sun Oct 21, 2007 4:26 am
Hey everyone...I am thinking of going to a pressure suit and maybe a neck brace for both me and my kids. I've done some searching on the site but I am hoping you folks can add additional experiences and or impressions to help me decide which way to go. I'm looking at the Koerta/Acerbis Pressure Suit for one...and anybody familiar with the Leatt Brace??? Thanks in advance for the input.

I am too looking for bodyarmour, shoulder and forearm protection.
As far as the Leatt goes very expensive but they have proven to be a lifesaver.
Motorbikes are a dear sport, it all depends on budget and how much you value your life and that of your family.
My son kits up in helmet, boots and armour every time he rides and manages rocks etc ok.
Off the bike He can't walk with out a trip to the doctor for stitches to knees or to the first aid bag for the easy stuff.
You can't wrap them in cotton wool all the time.
I consider helmet, boots and armour a minimum and there other alternatives to the Leatt which are cheaper and provide good protection.
The type of riding you intend to do should also influence the decision.Ray

I use the Rock Gardn Flak jacket.

I absolutely love this thing. It is a very open mesh unit, which I think is cooler than the more closed fabric of a pressure suit, and has , IMO, even better protection. I have crashed more than a few times and have been virtually unscathed. Mind you, these were not high-speed wild get offs, but the more common variety of crash. The Rock Gardn has the best back protection of any that I have seen, Longer and completely articulated. If you so desire, you can remove the arms and have a flak vest.

Since they are removeable, they are also somewhat adjustable for fit. You can remove the back protection as well, if desired.
Great piece of equipment.

We will have an adult Leatt you can try on at the RIDERS & RiderDown Ocotillo Event Nov 3 & 4. Art (VP of RiderDown) will be bringing it down from NorCAL for the event. RiderDown is a dealer for them now and the profit goes to help injured riders. Good insurance for the soul !

I'm with Joe on this one. I got the rock gardn in really like it. Great protection for fore arms and shoulders. Nice chest plate and the back brace feels safe. I like having the built in kidney belt. You can wear it over a tee shirt if it's hot or under your riding shirt. I like to have a tee under and either a warm or cool riding shirt over it, keeps it clean. Over all two thumbs up.

Hey guys...thanks for the feedback. I've been away on business so haven't had much opportunity to drop in.
After many years of off-road riding and racing up to and until my early twenties...I had not had any serious injuries. And I always wore the best protection available. Then after many years of on-road riding, I was hit by a car in a parking lot. While I recovered fully from the accident, it scared me away from road riding. I have only dabbled off-road as my kids have grown up. (7 & 10 yo) Now that they have both expressed interest in the sport...of course...I am pleased but at the same time I am concerned. I want them to survive without debilitating injuries. That being said, broken legs and such heal but it seems that neck and spine injuries are the biggies that mostly don't.
We currently ride with helmets (duh), roost protectors that include shoulder pads, elbow pads, knee pads, boots, and hip pads in the pants. It would seem that the pressure suits, whether they be made by Rock Gardn or oterwise, offer more protection than the roost protectors. The Leatt neck brace is much like the Hans which is a proven device. (Not designed for motorcycles however) I think that I am going toward the Leatt for us and then decide on the pressure suits. That there is new technology available to improve our safety...well that is a good thing and I am going to take advantage of it.'06 250X

I have the Axo Mesh style body armor. I LOVE IT, here is a pic. It has excellent arm protection and excellent back protection. The chest is the weakest part of it, but it is still good.
